Ultrasonic Velocity Measurement

The ULT-200 Ultrasonic Velocity Measurement System is a turnkey system that includes everything required to perform Ultrasonic Velocity measurements on laboratory specimens. The new hardware and software utilize the latest technology to allow for precise determination of compression (P) and shear (S or S₁ & S₂) wave velocities. With the ULT-200, the user has the ability to control the pulse signal polarity and number of pulses to stack. This is important in helping to eliminate the influence of the compression wave signals on the relatively weaker shear wave signals. The ULT-200 system uses a fast-acting pulser that provides excitation to the ultrasonic sensor and a very high speed analog-to-digital converter to store the resulting waveforms signals. The sampling rate can be set by the operator from 156 Hz up to 40 MHz to capture a wide range of ultrasonic signals. When used with a GCTS system, wave velocity measurements can be taken while performing other test procedures, such as triaxial or unconfined compression tests. The ultrasonic data can be collected at any specified interval, such as time, stress, strain or any other test parameter. The ULT-200 can also be used with CVA-100 Circumferential Velocity Anisotropy Apparatus to determine the compression and shear wave velocities in rock core specimens in different orientations to map anisotropy.

The ULT-2 P-Wave Measurement System is designed to easily integrate with the GCTS PLT-2W Point Load Tester to determine the compression wave velocity of a rock specimen during a point load test. With the ULT-2 the user also has the ability to control the pulse signal polarity, the pulse duration, and number of pulses to stack.

GCTS offers a wide variety of transducers to perform ultrasonic velocity measurements on differently sized test specimens in a variety of conditions.
